A Short List: 58 Entertaining and Interesting Phobias

Phobias have captured the imagination of the popular consciousness. This is a short list of a few of the more entertaining irrational paranoias.

Phobias are the words that characterize anxieties experienced by many (or few) people in the world today. Fredd Culbertson created a website known as phobialist.com on July 17, 1995 which lists the names of phobias that he was interested in. From that time, Fredd assembled over 500 phobias into a comprehensive list available at the above URL.

Apart from clichés like the spider fearing arachnophobes, phobialist.com also reveals that at least one person suffers from unusual phobias like arachibutyrophobia, otherwise known as the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of one's mouth. I would also recommend that you not attend Basic Training if you suffer from dishabiliophobia (see the list for an explanation). The following is a list of the most humorous and intriguing phobias on the list, including possibly the most ironic fear (besides phobophobia, of course), hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia.
